Evidence-based excellence: What works? Effectively implementing literacy in your school

Friday 9 February 2018, Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield

Successful development of literacy skills provides not only academic success but fruitful careers and fulfilling lives. However, 17% of the North East population have the literacy skills at or below those expected of a 9 to 11-year-old, according to the 2011 Skills for Life Survey.

So how can schools implement literacy progammes that work?

About

Join SCHOOLS NorthEast, the Education Endowment Foundation, and Shotton Hall Research School as we bring together school leaders and practitioners from across the North East to discuss the specific challenges and barriers to literacy faced by our students. The conference will focus on what works, what doesn’t, and examples of good practice from across the North East schools community.

Focus

The conference will address:

• Speaking, listening and wider understanding
• Effective implementation of phonics programmes
• Structured interventions for struggling pupils
• Accurately assessing pupil needs
• Myth busting
• Effective CPD for implementing literacy

Audience

Aimed at ALL staff in school, this is for anyone interested in practice, impact, value for money, accountability, and research.  This event will be a celebration of educational success in the North East and beyond that will aim to enable colleagues to return to their schools with practical guidance on how to implement effective literacy strategies from Early Years to Key Stage 4.
